Memorial Stadium

Memorial Stadium BrickSince today is Memorial day, I figured what better time to talk about the old Orioles and Colts stadium.  Memorial Stadium, the home of Orioles’ Magic, World Champion Orioles, All-star game, etc. This was also the stadium where I saw my first ballgame.

Memorial Stadium was built as a memorial to the fallen of World War I and II.

ERECTED BY THE
CITY OF BALTIMORE
1954

DEDICATED BY
THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL
AND THE PEOPLE OF BALTIMORE CITY
IN THE STATE OF MARYLAND

As a Memorial to All
Who so Valiantly Fought
and Served in the World
Wars with Eternal
Gratitude to Those Who
Made the Supreme
Sacrifice to Preserve
Equality and Freedom
Throughout the World

TIME WILL NOT DIM THE GLORY OF THEIR DEEDS

The stadium held many championship teams and Hall of Fame players (Both Baseball and Football). To name just a few players that called the stadium home: Jim Palmer,  Cal Ripken Jr., Frank Robinson, Raymond Berry, Lenny Moore, etc. It was also the home of Baltimore sport legends Brooks Robinson and Johnny Unitas (2 of the greatest players of all time). The following are a few of the championship teams: 1966 Orioles, 1970 Orioles, 1983 Orioles, and Superbowl V.

It is really sad to think that a great stadium and a memorial for the fallen of World War I and II could be demolished.

Hey there. Good post and you are so right. It still baffles me that it went down the way it did.

Did you ever see the documentary, the Last Season?
It is very interesting and insightful…
